Programs
The Finance Department curriculum covers a broad range of specializations and programs. Each academic program is designed to set students up for success through a rigorous curriculum that is leading-edge in its focus.
Finance students have the opportunity to:
- work with our faculty and experience how insights from the forefront of research can be used in practical business applications
- combine traditional classroom learning with real-world applications by:
- managing part of The Ohio State University Endowment in the Student Investment Management course
- trading and making a market in simulated securities in the Trading and Markets course
- working with Diamond Hill Capital Management analysts in the Applied Fundamental Investing course and
- collaborating with regional firms on a variety of 8-week consulting projects (Specialized Masters in Finance (SMF) program)
- networking with our Finance alumni in our courses, at alumni events, and in Undergraduate and Graduate finance related organizations

Finance Specialization
The new Finance curriculum allows students to choose from one of three Advanced Finance courses: Advanced Corporate Finance, Advanced Investments and Risk Management. Please see the advising sheet below for the Finance specialization curriculum.
Insurance
The Insurance specialization prepares students for the various employment opportunities in the field of insurance. Please the advising sheet below for the Insurance specialization curriculum.
Real Estate and Urban Analysis Major
The real estate specialization prepares students for the various employment opportunities in the field of real estate, focusing on the necessary skills to solve complex problems and understand the impact that the physical environment has on the shape and nature of communities. Real Estate Minor
The real estate minor provides students with an opportunity to complement their major studies with a specialization in real estate. Please see Real Estate Minor curriculum sheet for more information.
The Finance Department offers an array of opportunity across the college's graduate programs.
SMF is a rigorous nine-month intensive program that provides you with in-depth training in analytical techniques through a well-designed curriculum that teaches you both the theory and practice of today’s finance.
- Graduate Majors for MBA Students
The Finance major provides students with the principles of finance and analytic tools required to master practical issues in Finance, with applications in non-financial firms, financial institutions, government, and not-for-profit entities.
The Finance curriculum allows students to choose to follow one of four elective tracks:
Corporate Finance, Investments, Risk Management and Real Estate.

We offer a rigorous and highly structured doctoral program to prepare students to become scholars in leading academic institutions and make important contributions to the field of financial economics.
The Finance Department offers courses that are required or elective courses in majors in other departments at Fisher and elsewhere around the university. The semester version of these courses are all 3 hours or units, unless otherwise noted.

This course develops skills related to time value of money, risk and return with applications in business and personal finance. - Foundations of Investments

This course covers basic principles and methods of investment for non-business majors. - Foundations of International Finance
BUSFIN 3250
This course covers management of financial risk inherent with international business; problems of implementing corporate finance principles; International Capital Markets. For non-finance majors. - Foundations of Enterpreneurial Finance
BUSFIN 3290
This course considers financial challenges facing entrepreneurs, framing the issues, business plans, developing financial strategies, and structuring deals. For non-finance majors. - Introduction to Insurance and Risk
BUSFIN 3300
This course covers basic principles and main characteristics of the insurance industry and the fundamentals of risk identification, insurance contracts, and annuities. - Introduction to Real Estate
BUSFIN 3400
This course examines the economics of property rights the fundamental theories in urban economics and selected applications. - Law for Accountants
BUSFIN 4512
This course covers the fundamentals of Uniform Commercial Code. For business majors in accounting. - Legal Environment of Business
BUSFIN 3500
This course is an introduction to American legal institution and sources of law and an analysis of basic concepts of public and private law related to business decisions.
